i need a quick way to provide failover for my sql server. i just want
to have a backup ready to go if server A fails. i will have only two
servers. should i use clustering or mirroring?

Forst of all, there are a LOT of other variables so you really need to read
up on them.

Short answer is that clustering fails over the whole server (instance).
Mirroring fails over at the database level.

well, the client has only 2 windows 2003 servers and they are running
only one database on sql 2005. i'm thinking mirroring would be the
simplest for them to maintain once i set it up for them.

That sounds like a good candidate for mirroring.
