Default Active\Passive to Active\Active - 10-24-2007 , 05:04 PM

How can we convert our SQL Server 2000 (Windows Server 2003 R2)
Active\Passive cluster to Active\Active?

Thank you.

Install another instance and run it on the other node.

Please forgive my ignorance, but are you saying to install another instance
(active) on the passive node? If so, can we then remove the passive
instance? If so, how should we do this?

Thank you again for your help.

You don't install instances onto nodes. You install them onto the cluster.
The instance can run on whatever node you like. We don't use the terms
Active and Passive any more.

Tom is trying very hard to answer your question.

You have a Single-instance, two-node cluster. The 'Active/Passive'
nomenclature went away with SQL 7.0 when clustering setup and functionality
changed drastically. You can add more instances to your cluster. Each
Instance will act as an independent SQL Server. You cannot have two host
nodes "share" a set of databases and scale out that way.

Does this means.. if we have 2 instances on active/passive cluster... we can
make it active/active by just moving one instance on the other node. Thats
it.. correct? Thanks in advance for your reply.

Is it possible to change name of SQL Server Instance on Cluster? If yes, what

You cannot rename an instance if it is clustered:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260414

(See question 5.) You would have to reinstall.
