Default Unablet to Connect to SBS-2008 SQL Server via ODBC - 06-09-2009 , 12:13 PM

I have setup a VPN to a new SBS-2008 Server running SQL. I can map network
drives and access Exchange via Outlook. But when I try to setup the ODBC file
to connect to the SQL Server, I am unable to seee the server in the drop down
list. If I manually enter either by IP # of the server or by the server name,
it still does not connect. I get a

"Connection Failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error:53 {Microsoft}{ODBC
SQL Server Driver}{DBNETLIB}ConnectionOpen(Connect()).
Connection Failed: SQL State: '08001' SQL Server Error:17 {Microsoft}{ODBC
SQL Server Driver}{DBNETLIB}SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

I have tried to make this connection when in the office connected to the
network on the domain and it works. But, on XP or Vista PC's I get the same
error when trying to setup the ODBC. I have tried using SQL Console - Studio
Mgmt, through Code, and through the ODBC and none of them will give me access
to the SQL Server.
I also have opened port 1433 on the router to allow passthrough to the
SBS2008 Server's internal IP.
Any help would be appreciated.

I would check the logs but I expect that the domain account you're using (I
assume you're using Windows authentication) has not been granted rights to
the default database or does not exist at all. See Chapter 9.

Thank you, I will check the logs in the morning and report back to you.
