Default SQL Server Update --> Client CALs useless? - 11-11-2007 , 05:45 PM

Hi all,

a customer has several SQL Servers 2000 and wants to migrate to SQL 2005.
Currently used licensing model is per server and user CAL. Does an 'old' SQL
Server CAL permit the user to access SQL server 2005?

I know that the 2005 CALs allow to access all SQL versions. So if we are
forced to buy new CALs for 2005, what should we do with all these 2000 CALs?
They are just becoming totally useless, aren't they?

IMO license holders (CALs) should have a right to buy cheaper updates to
CALs when a newer server product version is bought...

Thanks,
Mario
