Default Some clients connect some don't - 02-07-2007 , 08:17 AM

What should I be looking for when 1/2 the Windows 2000 clients connect via
ODBC yet the other half do not? The error being returned is:

SQL State '01000'
SQL Server Error: 53
connection failed
And,
SQL State '08001'
SQL Server Error: 6
SQL Server not found

Thanks in Advance!

Have the users try on PCs that work to make sure it's a
client PC issue and not a login issue. It sounds like it's
the PC themselves though.
Try pinging the server by server name and IP address -
If you are using server names and the ping by server
name doesn't work, you have a DNS issue.
Next thing to check would be to verify the MDAC installation
for the clients you are having problems with. You can
download the component checker to do this. Component checker
and recent MDAC versions can be downloaded from:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/ref/mdac/downloads/
Check for other things like aliases set up on some PCs but
not others, maybe entries in the host file for some PCs and
not the others.
You would also want to check the following article:
Potential causes of the "SQL Server does not exist or access
denied" error message
