Hello, I need a client to administer one SQL Server 2000 database from my (old) PC (WinXP Sp1, .Net 1.1) just for a short while. I would like to create linked servers to flatfiles, Access mdb, Excel files etc... I am not sure if I can install linked serves on sql server 2000 eg. with SQL Server Express 2005. (Maybe I cannot create linked servers when using the free _database_ of Express 2005. But maybe the client does not have the menues to do so on _any_ database. This is why I am asking here.) I am wondering which software I should install. Enterprise Manager from the SQL Server CD or SQL server express 2005? thanx arno |

Hi Uri, If yoy have a Dev. Edition of SQL Server 2000 ,just go ahead the installation stopped because of an error to install MDAC. Shall I install MDAC 2.6 (Server 2000) or version 2.8 (Server 2003) manually before starting setup again? arno |

I can connect to the server within the workgroup through Windows network to shared data but I cannot connect to the SQL Server. Are there any special user rights that have to be granted on the SQL Server that it accepts my connection? Something like granting access for my PC... I type in the name of the SQL server in the assitant for the connection (it is not shown automatically in the list below), use SQL authentication (not Windows) and that's it. So I think I have to grant access on the SQL Server to make this work. |

You will have to add yourself (as an user) into a group of admins or another local group on the Windows Server when SQL Server is running |

You will have to add yourself (as an user) into a group of admins or another local group on the Windows Server when SQL Server is running thank you. we will check. It's a bit of a desaster what is happening here. The installation of Enterprise Manager first did not work because of an error of MDAC installation, the second attempt to install worked. Now I found that my ODBC drivers on the PC do not work anymore. I installed MDAC 2.8 (coming with SQL Server 2003) but that did not help. I cannot make my DB-Queries using ADO, I get the same error message as when trying to connect to the SQL-Server with Enterprise manager. (???) Will I have to reinstall an earlier version of MDAC (that came with Windows 2000 Server) to make that work again? Or should I simply install Windows XP SP2 (or 3)? (I cannot figure out how to reinstall odbc drivers.) arno |
