Default Need tool (Enterprise manager?) on Vista to access SQL Server 2000 - 08-29-2007 , 06:24 PM

What I'd like to do is download Enterprise Manager or something close, to
access and maniplate a remote SQL Server 2000 database.

I'm familiar with those tools. but for the life of me I can't figure out
what to download. I don't need to install a database on my PC. It seems like
I can't just download the client tools...but maybe I'm wrong?

I tried installing SQL Server 2000, but it says it's incompatible with my
operating system. It sounds like the SQL Server 2005 replacement for
Enterprise Manager only works on 2005 databases...why is this so hard?

Any help appreciated.

Gary

You can download and use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (you
can manage SQL 2000 and 2005)

Management Studio and Enterprise Manager aren't free client
tools. You can find some alternative tools listed at:
http://sqlserver2000.databases.aspfa...rver/msde.html

FYI...This is the support policy for SQL Server on Vista:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/sqlonvista.mspx

Hello Gary,

Microsoft has a tool that you could manage your instances with which is
called "Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express" Also there are third
party (shareware) tools that you can administer your instances by. You could
search from google for them.

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Description (from Microsoft's site)

Brief Description
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) is a free,
easy-to-use graphical management tool for managing SQL Server 2005 Express
Edition and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services.

Overview
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) is a free,
easy-to-use graphical management tool for managing SQL Server 2005 Express
Edition and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services. SSMSE
can also manage instances of the SQL Server Database Engine created by any
edition of SQL Server 2005.

Note: SSMSE cannot manage SQL Server Analysis Services, Integration
Services, Notification Services, Reporting Services, SQL Server Agent, or
SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition.

The tool doesn't have to be free. I just want something like Enterprise
Manager to manage a remote database like before - like the last ten years. If
I have to buy something, even more than I need (e.g., the ability to set up a
local database), I would consider it.

I looked at SQL Web Data Administrator
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...isplaylang=en).
Is that any good? Dos qanyone know? Does it run on Vista? It doesn't mention
Vista specifically. I don't want to run into another compatibility clash.

The other tools sound weak from their descriptions.

I feel like Microsoft has abandoned me and any other upgrader who needs to
remotely control existing SQL Server databases.

Hi Ekrem,

I'm not looking for a tool to manage SQL Server 2005 databases. I need a
tool - rather quickly - to manage SQL Server 2000 databases.

With that tool, you could manage SQL Server 2000 databases as well

About its performance, If your system is ok, it's also fine for me.

Good luck!
