Default ABSOLUTE Newbie: What to do now? - 11-10-2004 , 11:24 AM

I just downloaded and installed version 4.1.7 for Windows from mysql.com.
I'm running Windows 98.
From the Start menu I see the MySQL Server Instance Config Wizard and the
MySQL Command Line Client. When I open the Command Line Client I get the
prompt, "Password:" but I don't remember setting any passwords. I know this
is an absolute bonehead post. I admit it. What's next? Go back to
MS-Access because it's easy? I'd really like to try to learn MySQL.

Thanks.

Hi Richard!

By default, many MySQL installations create an initial user "root" with
a blank password.

I recommend starting here:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Tutorial.html

It just says that it can't connect to server on localhost when I type
"mysql -uroot" from a command line (DOS shell).

Wow. The first item on the page to which you were pointed tells you how to
connect to the server. Getting started with this stuff is pretty
challenging, and you're going to need to read the manual.
