I am currently trying to compile mysql++ on gentoo. I have include
mysql & mysql++. but I cant get it to compile it errors out on
mysql_init. I have come to understand that maybe I need to include a
library also? what library if so do I need to include?

If you're using Gentoo, the configure script should detect everything you
need to build the library from source. There is also an ebuild in the tarball
which may help you.
