Hello List -

I'm attempting to install the ODBC Connector (I've tried 3.51.12, =
3.51.16, 5.0.11) on a Windows XP Pro machine. The installation seems to =
be successful, but when I try to add the data source (via ODBC Data =
Source Administrator) the new driver is not listed.

When I installed the two different v3 distributions, no path was =
displayed in the installer and no option to identify the path. The =
installer told me the installation succeeded, but I can't find the =
driver in the data source admin.

When I installed v.5, the path was verified in the installer (c:\Program =
Files\MySQL\MySQL Connector ODBC 5.0) and after the installation I found =
the files there. But still no driver in the data source admin.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I presume you have actually clicked the Add button? The reason I ask
this is because I got caught by something like this when I installed
MyODBC. When you open the ODBC dialog in Control Panel you see a list of
existing connections. MySQL will not appear there initially. I took that
as meaning MyODBC was not correctly installed.

When you click on the Add button you should see something like "MySQL
Connector/ODBC v5" or "MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver" in the list of drivers.
If that is not there I don't know what your problem is.

John - Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did click the Add button.

On the User DSN tab, I have three existing data sources: dBASE files, =
Excel Files, and MS Access Database. I click on the Add button and get =
the Create New Data Source dialog, with a list of about 20 drivers. The =
MyODBC driver is not listed in that list, even though I thought I =
successfully installed it.

When I installed the v5.0 driver, the following directory was created, =
which contains a half dozen files:

C:\Program Fiels\MySQL\MySQL Connector ODBC 5.0\

When I installed the v.3.51 connector, even though the installation says =
it was successful, a new directory for the driver files is not created =
(that I can find.) But either way, no MySQL drivers are showing up in =
the Create New Data Source dialog.

Thanks for your reply - if you have any other ideas, please feel free to =
throw them out there.

-Katherine

Default RE: Trouble Installing MyODBC Connector - 06-29-2007 , 03:55 AM

Dear Katherine,

Have you tried registering the driver from the command line? I can confirm
that I don't have any special directories created when I install 3.51.x -
I'm on Vista x64 now, so all the files get put in SysWow64 (32-bit
compatibility directory) but on XP they get put in system32. You should have
myodbc3i.exe and myodbc3m.exe among others.

Myodbc3i.exe can be used to register the driver, which might allow you to
pin down where the problem is more accurately.

The command to register the driver can be seen if you type

myodbc3i /?

from the command prompt within the system32 / syswow64 directory. The
example for "register a driver" that they give uses .so files (I think
that's Linux?) but use can use the windows equivalent - I can't remember if
they're the lib files or the dll files. So, something like:

myodbc3i -a -d -t"MySQL ODBC Driver
3.51;DRIVER=c:\windows\system32\myodbc3.dll;SETUP= c:\windows\system32\myodbc
3S.dll"

or

myodbc3i -a -d -t"MySQL ODBC Driver
3.51;DRIVER=c:\windows\system32\myodbc3.lib;SETUP= c:\windows\system32\myodbc
3S.lib"

That should give you a "driver count" - if it's greater than 1, then you
already had the driver registered. If it fails, post the message here and we
might be able to help out. If it succeeds, try using the example (again,
"myodbc3i /?") of creating a DSN from the command line and see what message
you get there:

myodbc3i -a -su -t"DSN=MyDSN;DRIVER=MySQL ODBC 3.51
Driver;SERVER=myServerHostname;UID=myUser"

or (for a system data source rather than a user data source)

myodbc3i -a -ss -t"DSN=MyDSN;DRIVER=MySQL ODBC 3.51
Driver;SERVER=myServerHostname;UID=myUser"

Again, if that gives error messages then maybe post them here..?

Hope that helps,

Al McNicoll

Hello List -

I'm attempting to install the ODBC Connector (I've tried

installation seems to be successful, but when I try to add

When I installed the two different v3 distributions, no path
was displayed in the installer and no option to identify the

When I installed v.5, the path was verified in the installer

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
