Happy to help Steve. I assume that there was at least some performance
gain?

Most databases have some sort of performance tracing tool that helps in
performance tuning.

And don't worry - this particular question I would categorise as highly
'advanced' in the query tuning world. Many people are not really that good
at tuning SQL queries and in all fairness, optimisation can be different
between databases as they each have their own rules.

Right now I don't have much data, so it's hard to tell. I didn't do any
real timing. Sure seems like there'd have to be, but even so it's just
the right way to go all the way around. The SQL statement is much
simpler, making it easier to understand and verify, and the app is just
plain easier to maintain.
