Default Reflex database recovery - 08-05-2003 , 03:36 PM

OK this is a really old one but we still have someone using Borland's
Reflex
2.0 program.

They've corrupted their database.

Their database is now corrupted and won't open giving error "File
Damaged".

I've found out that back when this was an issue (nearly 10 yrs ago)
Borland wrote and distributed a program called "Recover" which fixed
files damaged in this way. I've searched the whole web and cannot
find it.

If anyone knows where I can find it or if they have a copy I would
really appreciate it. They will be migrated onto another database
platform at the soonest opportunity!

I have the Reflex 2.0 recovery program and would be glad to send it to you.
It was designed to run under DOS and I don't know how well it will run under
Windows. I do know that Reflex 2.0 runs well under many flavors of Windows,
and I continue to use it every day.

Please e-mail me directly and I'll send you the recovery program and details
about using it. I will also send instructions on how to run Reflex under
Windows.

Corruption of Reflex 2.0 files usually is due to a "feature" of the program
called Asynchronous Disk I/O. This needs to be turned off when Reflex is
installed or run because it is not compatible with modern operating system
software. Asynchronous Disk I/O was designed to speed up disk access in the
days when computers had 1MB or less of RAM and did not use disk caching
software.

Despite its age, Reflex 2.0 continues to be a great flat-file database
program. If your associate likes Reflex, there is really no great need for
him to migrate.

Keith Bernstein
