What do you mean by "an express part of its design" ? "An integral
part" right ?

From <http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/express>:

2. Specific or precise.
Right.
In other words, it is an overt, intentionally designed feature of Firebird
that it makes only one file, not one occurring by chance or emergent phenomenon.
Ok. So time to get a new edition of my database book - Navathe &
Elmasri.
Thanks Lew.

I've decided to use MySQL on Linux & DB2 for Windows (I'm using
Firebird for the timebeing).

I am not a fan of MySQL personally - perhaps a prejudice from its history of
not supporting SQL fully in certain modes, and certain other aspects of it.
I reckon those aspects don't concern me - a beginner :-)
In the free Linux RDBMS universe I'm partial to PostgreSQL - it's simple
enough to use personally and robust enough for large-scale enterprise use, and
compatible enough for a SQL / relational junkie.

I tried PostgreSQL, but I missed out the documentation which led me to
3 nights of frustrating efforts on getting it to my needs. So I'm
stuck to Firebird.

It's been too useful for me - I have yet to try Derby or Firebird, which I
hear are fine products.

Is it now?

Mind you, I personally do not know about Firebird. I was referencing the
definition of the adjective "express" using information about Firebird
provided by others.
