Default Building a website but need some database designing help.... - 12-22-2003 , 09:30 PM

i am currently in the process of building a website that is going to
contain a member base(or so i hope). I don't know much about building
your own website but am teaching myself html, java, flash and
dreamweaver. Am starting to become more proficient but i need to
understand how to do this, it is very important to the layout of the
site. Does anyone have instructions? Maybe an example? Can i use
Access for this? i can use all the help i can get, thanks

Instead of starting from scratch, I would check out the opensource
"frameworks" that exists. I have tried Plone, which is built upon
Zope. It was quite simple to install (tried it on debian), and I'm
quite happy with the way it works

www.plone.org

There are other similar projects out there, but I dont know much about
them.

You can use Access and connect with access using ODBC and ASP (setup odbc in
'control panel', select ODBC, Click on [Add], select Microsoft Access
Driver, Data Source Name aka DSN should be something small and easy to
remember, i.e. MB, then select the database)

This will tell your 'page' how to connect to the Database. You will have to
going through a server to get to the http://. If you are not on a server
you can setup Personal Web Server on your computer.

Anyway, there's alot more to it and I can't explain it all here. Some good,
easy reading, informative books (rather small and not too expensive) are
Visual Quickstart Guides. I know they have HTML and JavaScript books. Not
sure about ASP. Good luck!

DO NOT use ODBC and DSN's to connect to your database. It's outdated
technology, use OLEDB instead.

Follow this link for a more concise answer.
