Default VFP 9 Quibbles - 09-21-2006 , 02:30 PM

VFP 9 has some, for me, irritating behaviours. How do I:

1) turn off the history in the command window? (I like a clean start
when I start up.)

2) turn off the command completion? (I know what I want to type. VFP
adding "helpful" bits causes trouble.)

3) turn off the changing of my text? (I do not want capitalised
keywords spelled in full and displayed in blue. I want what I type.)

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Set _command.prg to be read-only.

You should find this in the Home(7) folder.

Tools -> Intellisense Manager

See above.

Colors are controlled in Tools -> Options -> Editor.

I'm wondering why you upgraded, though. It's like buying a fantastic new car
and immediately replacing the engine with a 20-year-old engine.

No, it is having a way that works get disrupted by something new.

I find that auto-completion is an fantastic way to enter errors
into what I type. I pass on that. I would also rather know that I
made an error than find a bug later that is due to sabotage^Whelp.

YMMV.

Gene, I know it may be hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but stop
fighting it.

Once you get used to intelisense, you'll wonder how you ever got along
without it. The only "gotcha" that bothered me was the adding of the "TO "
keyword, which can be turned off (Tool/Intelisense Manager/Advanced tab/Edit
Properties button/lEnableFullSetDisplay). Many other preferences can be
changed by tweaking these values, but I think you need to give them a chance
before you turn things off en-mass.

Give it a try for one or two weeks - but pick weeks not already
guaranteed to be adrenaline high.

At first I was mostly negative as well, but I adapted within a few days.
That *does* include the tendency to swear after blindtyping
"set filter to blah " <enter>
and finding vfp doesn't like the
"set filter to to blah " <enter> acutally in the command window <bg>.

But all in all it enhances speed...

thomas

Sorry, but I have already used it in other products. I do not
like it.

I was maintaining a spreadsheet of duties for a Toastmasters
International club. It got nasty when one club member's name was the
start of another's. That introduced errors that I had to correct.

It is easier to correct my errors only. I know the sorts of
errors that I am likely to make.

That is exactly the sort of nonsense that I am referring to.

Not for me.

I also turn off a lot of Word's help, because it actually gets in
the way. I have lost hours to Word's so-called AutoCorrection that
made otherwise-correct things wrong, that is, until I figured out how
to turn it all off. It was difficult to find how to turn off the
automatic bullet list creation. After all, what I was doing was
correct. Why would I think to look under "AutoCorrect"?

Take care not to become the tool of your tools.

Clearly not! I'm suprised he risks it by still using a keyboard ---
those punchcards are so much more precise - your fingers can't possibly get
crossed and the keyboard types the wrong thing and then you're stuck with
the keyboard's error. So, I turn off the keyboard "correction" of my
punchcards and go back to my more precise method. I've also quit using a
dictionary because I should just remember the word instead of using this
tool -- what if I look up the wrong word? This imprecise dictionary could
cause me to be a tool of the tool. Finally, I've quit using a thermostat in
my house. I don't want some computer telling me what temperature it is --
what if it corrects it too high or too low?

FWIW, I also had many of the same complaints. But I have since come to
appreciate these new features, and now I miss them when I work with VFP6.
