Using xp_sendmail not through exchange server - 08-25-2003 , 08:57 PM

I had wrote a visual basic 6.0 program, and it uses sql server 2000
extended stored-procedure ,xp_sendmail,to send email out. Could
xp_sendmail send email not by exchange server?
