Default Newbie : Client Server with Visual Foxpro Tables? - 05-20-2004 , 03:36 PM

I am using VFP 5.0.

Presently, we have some MS Access applications that can not do the
job. We are considering moving to Foxpro as it is a good department
wide solution that can handle many concurrent users.

What I want to do is create a Foxpro application with the hooks in it
for Client Server. The reason for this is because there is a strong
possibility that the back end will one day be Oracle. I want to be
able to swap out the back end foxpro tables and put in the Oracle
tables. ( With some minor coding changes I hope )

Can I do this with Foxpro? If so, how do I go about it. Is there a web
site that has sample codes for this.

Thanking you in Advance

Heya Rich -
there are some folks over at Profox and OpenTech that have done this [and
can talk about it]
check out
http://opentech.leafe.com
and
the ProFox Search Page
at http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox

and use search terms 'backend switch remote views'

BUT?? IF I WERE YOU ? I'd at least upgrade to VFP 6, at a minimum.

hth - mondo regards [Bill]

Rich,
Before buying a framework, you may want to check out "Client-Server Applications w/h Visual FoxPro and SQL Server - by Chuck Urwiler, Gary DeWitt, Mike Levy and Leslie Koorhan" at http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalogpricelists/csvfp.htm for a preview of the issues you need to deal with. At least check out the TOC and the Sample chapters.

While they talk about MS SQL server, virtually everything but the connection string is the same for Oracle. I agree that you need to update from 5.0. VFP 9.0's (free) public beta will be released in just a couple weeks, and it's will certainly be stable enough to do some evaluation with. (See Ken Levy's newsletter at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro/letters/ - also check out the prior months links listed on the right for even more details on 9.0!)
