Default MSDN Help - 10-05-2003 , 01:45 PM

Hi -

I an new at VFP and in the process of migrating a FPW 2.6 application to VFP.
I am getting my feet wet in VFP.

I installed all the MSDN CDs (plural). In the tools / Files I changed the Help
file to point to the MSDN120.COL. in the Vistual studio .. ... / .... / folder.

These are some of the problems I am facing .

1. Now when I hit 'F1' the help menu does not come up. I have to click on Help
/ Microsoft Visual Foxpro Help and only then it comes up. Am I missing
something here?

2. Also when I have the HELP pointing to MSDN120.col, I can right click on
anything on a form and click on HELP - NOTHING Comes up.

3 .I was forced to change the HELP file to point to FOXHELP.CHM. Now everything
works. I can right click on any control and click 'Help' to get Context
sensitve help -. EXCEPT when I include an Active X object I cant get the
context sentive help to work.

Thanks in advance ....

Shah

Since the changeover to .Net, the library no longer works with VFP. The last
version of the library to work with VFP was October 2001. Make sure you have
that one and that it's the one VFP is pointing to.

Well, this library is July 2001. Should it not work?

It should, yes. Which way did you do it? If you install Visual Studio first,
at some point in the installation of the MSDN, it should ask if you want it
to attach itself to visual studio.

As far as I'm concerned, when I'm working in Fox (6,7 and 8) I still attach
to the foxhelp chm file because the MSDN doesn't reset it's default
depending on which development tool you're using, and I've never found an
easy way to do it. In other words, when you ask for help, it doesn't know
what language you're currently working in, and I've always found it a bit of
a pain.

I installed the VFP 7.0 first and then installed the complete MSDN.
dont remember it asking me if it wanted to attach to the Visual studio.

Also when I right click on any "Active X control' in form designer and then
click 'Help' I dont get anything. How can you access help for an Active X
control and how in the world would you know how it works....???//

I don't recall that it asks about attaching to VFP7 (it may have done, but I
don't remember), but I'm sure it did ask about Visual Studio.

Depends on the activeX control you're using. For example, when I use the
Microsoft Up/Down control and choose 'help' from the right-click menu, it
uses "cmctl298.chm" (the common control help file) with an internal pointer
to the specific help on the up/down control. My VFP help is pointed to
foxhelp.

For other activeX controls, I imagine it similarly uses whichever .chm file
it requires! Because my VFP points to the foxhelp file, I have to assume the
activeX help is nothing to do with the MSDN.

Sorry I can't give you better help with this.
