There were "native" options as well.
Alan Griver published a Foxtalk article that redefined the entire keyboard
using OKL's. George Goley published an FPA article that used a cursor with
one record, one character long, to accept keyboard input and build the
search string.
I never actually liked incremental search in the first place. If a list of
items is long enough to NEED incremental search, it's probably too long to
show the users anyway. <g>

Back then, the solution was a product called JKEY - do a search on the net,
it may still be around in an acceptable form.
