Default FoxPro Mac 2.6 question / dBase IV Runtime Plus Mac Wanted - 05-28-2004 , 09:08 AM

Hi! Thanks for reading this. I have been working with data in dBase
IV format on Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X for a few months now. The data
resides on a server and I wish to keep the server from getting
confused. When I edit the data tables on the desktop in FoxPro 2.6
Mac things go smoothly. However, for some operations FoxPro Mac wants
to convert the files to FoxPro format (especially the DBT). Is there
a way to persuade FoxPro Mac to leave the data in dBase format, and
also to create tables in dBase IV format?

I am also looking for a copy of the old dBase IV Runtime Plus 1.1
Macintosh package. I am wondering if this will help solve my problem.
Anyone have this gathering dust on the shelf that would like to part
with it? Please e-mail if you do. Does anyone know if this will run
under OS 9/Classic?

Brief nostalgia break:

I picked up a copy of dBase Mac a while back to test out, but it is
not really file compatible with dBase/FoxPro. While it did not help
my day job, I really got a kick out of the package. Like other Ashton
Tate releases, it includes LOTS in the package: a binder, books,
tutorials, references, diskettes, diskette pockets, slipcase, and so
on. Those were the days! I really miss software packages being
PACKAGES, if you know what I mean. I guess that's why I keep my dBase
IV 1.1 and my FoxPro 2.6 packages on the shelf. :-)

By the way, if anyone cares, dBase Mac runs fine under vMac and other
68K emulators with Mac OS 6.x. It does NOT run under 8.x or later on
PPC.

David,
Other than a plain "vanilla" .DBF, FoxPro has never tried to use other xBase variants file types. It will always convert non-Fox memo and index files and use it's native file types. (The one exception to the ..DBF rule is that Clipper actually could create tables with more than 255 fields - Fox could use these.)

OOPs that should read "... Fox couldn't use these."
