Default FoxPro 5 Product Info - 08-10-2004 , 07:25 AM

Hi there

I am trying to find out basic info about Visual FoxPro 5, such as:

+ What is its development language - is it still xbased or is it VBA?

+ What are the main features of VFP 5 (I know its old)

+ Visual FoxPro 5 website resources / code examples

+ ..and possibly, the differences between VFP 5, 6, 7 and 8

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve,
While VFP is definitely not VBA, it is only partially xBase code. Many new generic Windows properties and methods abd functions have been exposed in the continually evolving VFP language.

You can check the features of VFP 8.0 (the current version) at the MS web site - http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro/ you may want to start with http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro/productinfo/. You can read about all the new things coming in VFP 9.0 in the VFP Newsletters starting at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro/letters/. Don't forget to follow the archive links for more info on 9.0. And of course you can download the free public beta of 9.0 at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en.

There are so many differences between VFP 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and the upcoming 9, that there are a series of books that help to point them out. (There is also a small section in each versions' help file that lists the major changes.) Go to http://www.hentzenwerke.com/, "What's New in Visual FoxPro 7.0", "What's New in Visual FoxPro 8.0" and "New in Nine: Visual FoxPro's Latest Hits" at
http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalog/newin7.htm, http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalog/wnvfp8.htm and http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalog/wnvfp9.htm- all are available in eBook form, so you can be reading in minutes!

I probably didn't make it quite clear enough, but I am really only
interested in VFP 5. Are their any website resources for VFP 5?

Would also like to view VFP 5 sample code.

Thanks.

The difference between Vfp5 and Vfp8/9 is not like the one
between Visual Basic 6 and VB.NET, for example.
IOW, there is nothing like a strong community explicitly
focused to Vfp5, as far as I know.

So I'd say Rick's advice is correct as always.
Maybe a simplified calculation could be
Vfp5 = Vfp8 - ((nnn) BugFixes - (nn) cool-new-features)
flame on me.

Each version ships with a lot of examples. Vfp5 came with
an entire demo application called "Tastrade".
Also many examples here in the groups of course
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search ,
and at the Fox Wiki http://fox.wikis.com , where you'd
probably find many links to other great sites provided by
Fox developers.
For books see www.hentzenwerke.com
