Yes, it's the same person. These are all about the same person.
There are actually those who claim that he operates under a variety
of pseudonyms as well, but I did not try to establish that one way
or the other. (Actually, the name he is using here may well be
a pseudonym; the first and last names are both very common.)

Some of you are still unsure whether he is a troll or not.

Listen. And understand. That troll is out there. It can't be
bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity,
or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until
constructive conversation is dead.
I'm convinced. Good research, Marshall. Thanks. --dawn

Those are religious differences. Dawn, you congratulate him for
foolishness.

You know, you really are a poor representative of this ng. You should
not be posting these sorts of personal attacks. You should not be
building these pointless threadlets. I can't let this go. And you
force me to reply, once again. I don't want to have to do this.

But you clearly are ill-equiped to understand the issues that were
discussed in a religious ng of a particular religion - and again which
has NO BUSINESS being discussed here. You apparently don't get that. I
do.

To be absolutely clear:

http://home.jtan.com/~ircd_/meetmarkjohnson/

Is a bitter screed, and a complaint that in many parts is not so
different than a description of the orthodox point of view of that
religion. This was pointed out to that troll, by others, at the time,
in various threads of the same ng. Those folks didn't understand the
complaint in points, because quite simply it was a complaint with the
religious teaching of that faith, itself, and they and I understand
it. That troll was so far gone that he/she imagined such was an
accusation of some sort of wrong-doing by the standard of that faith,
when precisely the opposite was true. So there.

But there is no point in discussing this on THIS ng. I know that. And
now so do you. I don't know how else to tell you this.

Nice research and analysis, thank you.

Last night I had nothing better to do and so spent some time searching
for past activity from our newest member. The raw numbers are
staggering:
this is someone who posts hundreds of messages a month, totaling tens
of thousands of posts on hundreds of newsgroups going back a decade.
He has averaged over five posts a day for the last ten years.
He most often appears in areas of maximum controversy:
abortion, homosexuality, creationism.
And now database theory :-)

Until this excellent post, I was.

I hope this was a joke.

In any case, my 2c would be (not that anyone cares at this point) that
I can tell you that this kind of negativity, suppression of opinion,
excommunication even, is just a tad bit silly. I reverently respect
the opinions of Marshal and mAterdam, but I think this witch-hunt is a
bit too much. I can tell you working in IT, seeing some of these
opinions would prevent me from hiring some of the hunters.

As for Mr. Mark Johnson, well, I guess I would say to him just walk
away from this one. There seems to be no constructive criticism here.

Walking away is very sound advice. I've tried to do just that. I had
to follow-up to correct so much of this, because I could not let it
stand unchallenged, and didn't even bother to point out that the
hypocrisy on this ng has risen to frightening levels. But it appears
that perhaps the desire of a few, here, to persist in posting
completely off-topic threads, desperately attempting to prove
themselves right in throwing around the word, troll, to the extent
that they become trolls themselves, is beginning to fade. And, if so,
and if they get whatever it is out of their systems, these pointless
attacks and utterly off-topic threads will simply go away.

Very nice piece of research! I remember years ago when Fabian Pascal
was kicked out so many Compuserve database and other forums for his
flood of attacks on posters. He was not the worst; there was a woman
with Logorhea (complusive writing as a mental disorder) and paranoia
who would randomly attack people on any forum without stopping for days
without sleep. When she collapsed and got back on her meds, she would
swing the other way and complusively apologize for days.

Oh come on Joe! That is absurd. There is no comparison between what Pascal
does and what a troll does. His writing is always uncompromising, often
critical, and never generous to you. But it is also nearly always carefully
defended (at least the first time he makes a point). Trolls compulsively
seek attention for its own sake, Pascal compulsively argues about substance.

Trolls are rightly hounded out of town because their objective is to disrupt
communication; Pascal seems to get hounded out town because he has what
amounts to poor table-manners: zero time for people whose ideas he is
satisfied he has rebutted and no instinct for mollification. There are some
people on this ng whose social graces are refined to a nauseating degree,
almost sick-making in their affected faux humility, who haven't a worthwhile
thought in their head. I'd sooner have ten Pascals for every one of those.

(Note that I have no idea about what goes on between you two
off-line--though maybe I can guess. But off-line scrapping cannot be
trolling by any stretch of the imagination.)

Roy
