Default Database internals... - 10-23-2003 , 04:10 PM

I am looking for information on the web pertaining to relational database
system internals. Preferably explaining an implementation of page, record,
index, etc. structures in memory and on disk. Anyone know of some web
resources I could take a look at?

Garcia-Molina&Ullman&Widom Database is quite good describing the basics.
Also search for Ph.D thesis at citeseer that describe particular systems.
Example: Monet RDBMS Kernel by Peter Alexander Boncz.

And if you want to know a new approach that makes all of this
obsolete, you might read the Appendix A from Date's "Introduction to
Database Systems" 8 ed, or to wait for his next book: "Go Faster! The
TransRelational(TM) Approach to DBMS Implementation".

Alfredo

How bout: "More Vapourware! The DBMS you can't touch".

or

"Set Theory is our religion! Go ahead and do some research, we dare
you. You're willing to ignore 1000's of years of mathematical
development?

or

"Okay! we admit to being platonists. We love to use the so-called
rock solid foundation of Mathematics as an authority figure but you
know we don't stay up all night reading Springer-Verlag texts"

Buy all three and you receive an opportunity to attend a service where
Reverend Pascal will reveal a new eternal mathematical truth follwed
by 3 hours of hypocritical blather.

I killfiled him last night, but the killfile is so full now he didn't even
hit the bottom let alone bounce.

You do realize that book may never be published? Date has not
received permission from the mystery entity that has the patents.
Anyways, if its as bad and unscientific as his Versata promo
book...then we have missed nothing.

Hey Dude. How come you dont bow down
and spout "CJ Date" chapter and verse like most
other ascii-generating AI programs in this newsgroup?

And while on CJ Date, can you tell me whether
he restricts his views and works and publications to
the database environment alone, or does he deal with
problems external to the database environment.

IE: Does he put forward means of integrating the
database (software) with other software in the general
environment (eg: third party apps) or does he rest in
an insular [theoretical] database centric mode?

(I await a copy of his book).
