Default Sybase SDK(Open Client) & Open Server Library Name Change Poll - 01-06-2004 , 04:38 PM

Sybase engineering is considering changing the names of the
Sybase SDK (Open Client) and Open Server libraries in the next
major release.

The proposed name changes would look something like:
libct_r.so changed to libsybct_r.so
libct_r.a changed to libsybct_r.a
libct.so changed to libsybct.so
libsrv_r.so changed to libsybsrv_r.so
and so on...

The change has been requested by a few customers in order to
avoid name conflicts with other libraries. For example, Solaris
has a "libintl.so" and Sybase has a "libintl.so".

The effect of this change would be that Makefiles for all of your
applications would need to be updated to reflect the new library
names. You would then need to relink (and possibly recompile)
all of these applications.

NOTE: Sybase already recommends relinking (and recompiling) your
applications when going from one major release to the next
(going from 12.0 to 12.5 for example). So, the extra step would
really be updating your Makefiles.

This post is to solicit customer feedback on the proposed name changes.

I am FOR the name change. I have been hit by the conflict with libinit
many times.

And Sybase has sent "lucky_justin69" to check our opinion?

Who's asking and where are the answers going?

It's one of the engineers in the OpenClient group that is "hiding" behind
that moniker (probably for spam reasons).

Yes, please do change, I think I've been bitten by this one myself.

Sorry, I meant to sign the message "Sybase Product Support Engineering".

Last month I received over 2000 spam messages (most of which were
caught in our spam filter) so I no longer use my real email.

That's about par for the course, I think.

I run SpamAssassin here, and last week I had 712 messages with a score of
of 20 or more (those get tossed directly).

Then I had 500 messages with a spam score between 8 and 20 (those bounce
with an error).

And then there are about 20 messages per day with a score between 3 and 8
that get quarantined (and since September I've only had one false positive in that
in the 3 - 8 range).

So that's about 1300 spam messages per *week*. I really don't know what
I'd do if I couldn't run something like SpamAssassin...
