Default Oracle vs. Sybase - 06-16-2004 , 12:38 PM

Are there any known dialect differences between Oracl and Sybase, or do I
use the same calls to access both bases? Can anybody help me to sort out the
main differences in the comands (I'm new to Sybase)

Except for the most of the standard SQL, which is largely ANSI-compliant for
both products, Oracle and Sybase ASE use completely different syntax.
For some links to documents listing syntax for similar operations, see
www.sypron.nl/syblinks.html.

Not only is the syntax different as Rob has indicated the underlying
architecture and types of objects are different. Knowledge of Sybase
is about as useful in Oracle as SELECT * FROM ... and ends shortly
thereafter.

For an excellent book on making the adjustment ... if you find yourself
working with both ... get Tom Kyte's book "Expert one-on-one Oracle" and
read the first three chapters with great care.
