Default Drop TEMPDB - 09-15-2004 , 11:28 PM

Is ASE server working without tempdb?

I want to mirror the tempdb on Unix box.

I think I have to drop it the re-create it with disk mirror

Please advise ASAP

First, you cannot drop tempdb.
Apart from that, disk mirroring applies to database devices, and therefore
to databases that are (partly) located on a mirrored device; mirroring does
not apply to databases directly.
In any case, using Sybase's software-based disk mirroring will slow down the
device I/O. For tempdb, this is perhaps not what you want.

Hello Shawn,

Are you wanting to move tempdb or just mirror it? Use hardware
mirroring if available. SYBASE disk mirroring does only apply to
devices but can be used effectively to move devices around. Hopefully
you segregate your databases on individual devices and do not mix
them, especially tempdb. This makes for easier management.

You can "drop" tempdb devices EXCEPT for the fragment contained on the
master device. See the write-up in the manual under: "How to Reduce
the Size of tempdb" in the "Troubleshooting and Error Guide".

Cheers,

Sara ...
