Default Can't start server on Linux - 02-05-2004 , 08:00 PM

Hi all,

I am running 11.9.2 on RH 6.2. Yes its ancient. We were preparing to
upgrade when we got hit by a t0rnKit. Well the sys admin. got rid of it
but some how in the process sybase stopped working. This is how we
start it and what happens.

/opt/sybase-11.9.2/bin/dataserver -d/opt/sybase-11.9.2/masters.dat
-e/opt/sybase-11.9.2/install/prod.log -M/opt/sybase-11.9.2

00:00000:00000:2004/02/05 20:31:31.74 kernel kdrdconfig: Invalid Config
checksum, unable to use config.
00:00000:00000:2004/02/05 20:31:31.74 kernel kdconfig: unable to read
primary master device
00:00000:00000:2004/02/05 20:31:31.74 kernel kiconfig: read of config
block failed

Oddly enough the backup server starts OK. How can I fix this. I have
much important data in a database (not the master db) that will
hopefully start up with this. Unfortunately our backups may not be
trustworthy.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris,

If you're still having this problem, (I just got around to checking the
newsgroup today) check your error log for the last time you sucessfully
started the server and opened the master database. If your path and
filename for the master device are correct, then make sure the device,
path, and file (/opt/sybase-11.9.2/masters.dat) still exist, are owned
by sybase, and sybase has rw permissions on them. If this is true, then
check the Sybase Knowledge Base for how to recover from a corrupt Master
Database.

When I searched on your error message, I saw one case with instructions
on how to verify that the master 'device' (unix file) was readable and
to proceed from there.

If the devices on your system are working, you may need to rebuild
master and restore the master database from backup (which should restore
sysusages, which should have the layouts and dbid's of your user
databases).

If I recall correctly, the sequence of events would be:
1) run buildmaster to create a master device and database (if you are
unsure of the size, check the error log from a prior startup of the
server when it initialized the devices and opened the master database)
(caution! the size specified is number of pages)

2) start the server in single-user mode (-m parameter)

3) restore the master database from backup

4) shutdown the server

5) startup the server

6) check the integrity of your user databases (sysusages and
sysdatabases restored with master tell the server what and where the
other databases are)

7) If they are good, take a backup at this point, if not, now you're in
a position to restore your user databases from backup.

Good luck.
