Hi, After a lot of search through numerous web-pages, I have failed to understand what does a database catalog mean. I understand what schemas are, but I have yet to find a description of catalog. Do they exist just to categorize the space in a huge database ? JDBC provides a call to get the catalogs in a database as a part of the database metadata. Can the databases that support catalogs (any examples of such databases??) have any schemas that do not belong to a catalog? I mean, can a schema (or a table if the schemas are not supported) not be a part of some catalog in a database that supports catalogs. Any hints or suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks in advance. Mahim. |
