Default social security concerns - 02-08-2008 , 09:21 AM

Matt, Alex:

I asked my mother and found out that my sister never actually divorced her
Muslim ex-husband. She is drawing "widow" social security or is eligible to
draw it. She is 61 and her ex died about 8 years ago or more. Terri and I
were in San Francisco and visited my sister when her ex was in the hospital.
Terri prayed over him and tried to get him to "receive Jesus" and that got
his relatives (and my sister) upset.

The school district, South San Antonio, where Terri worked from 1973 - 1980,
opted out of social security. I do not know how many quarters Terri paid
into social security on other jobs or as self-employed, but I have asked her
several times in the past to be sure to pay into it. I was unaware that she
is not eligible for my social security if she divorces and possibly she just
discovered that herself. I do not know what she has paid since she has
handled all finances and has been highly secretive. She has taken out IRA's
and I know on at least one occasion she took out an IRA in one of our sons
name because he was eligible and it was advantageous, but the money that
paid for the IRA was from our community property (i.e.: my income). I think
it was only $1000 and believe it was cashed in only a year or two later when
needed for tuition.

Wow. That was actually very interesting. Like tuning into a soap opera on
Wednesday afternoon for five minutes.
