Some newbie questions. -

I've had a fair amount of experience with the old dBase programs and the
Clipper programming language. Now I'm getting my feet wet with postgresql.
I used the Access GUI to create a table and began inputting data. Some way
into the process I discovered that a character field in the table was too
small--I had it at 50 chars and it should be 80. I can't find any reference
on how to change it; I can't even find a way to to show me what character
type I had made it in the first place. Could someone help me out with this?
Is there a way of manually entering queries and viewing their results with
the GUI, or one must have a parallel connection open in a text window to do
that?
I'm disabled and have a very small income. I'm hoping a friend will buy me a
book on PostgreSQL. I've seen good reviews on the O'Reilly book with the
big mammoth on the cover. Is this is a good one? Are there others people
can suggest?
