Thanks Tom,

Guys,

Let me start at the beginning. I am sure that I am not going to say this efficiently.

I have installed the latest Windows version of PostgreSQL. Everything looks wonderful. The installation process created a guest account Postgres with a password. However from my system adminstrator account I cannot see the Postgres account. However if I try to create such an account, the system says it already exists.

Further, When I go to the services panel it informs me that PostgreSQL is Running.

However after I logoff the System Administrator account and successfully logon to the Postgres account and bring up PGAmin III my singular postgresql database folder has a big red X on it.

I then double click on the DB folder and a box comes up and asks me for a password. I then reply with of course every password I used during the installation and then I try every password I have ever used. Result: nothing.

I cannot believe that this is simply a forgotten pw. Unfortunately i am not smart enough yet to unravel all of your suggestions about permissions and service accounts and sockets.

However if you could lead me in the correct direction I will try to get over these last hurdles

Henry

pS I am running the latest version of WIndows XP

Hi Henry -

This forum is just for problems with PGFoundry itself - you may want to repost
your question to the pgsql-general mailing list:

http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-general/

Yours,

Can you access postgres through the pgsql command screen? I'm not at my
XP box but it's something like Start->Programs->PostgreSQL8->pgsql
command. This may help identifiy where the problem is.

I do not have the option you indicate I have only the following items in my submenu:

PQAdmin
PSQL to Template1

That's the one. Template1 is the template used as the pattern or model
when you create other databases. So if you can access PSQL to Template1
then you know that postgres is indeed running correctly, and you can
check out which databases are created (\l for list), \? for help on
internal slash commands, etc.

If you can't access it this way, then postgres isn't running correctly.
If you CAN access it, the problem lays elsewhere. Let us know.

Start Service
Stop Service

I have no idea what template1 is at this point. The service is started; i have started it and it shows up in the task manager. i beginning to think that I screwed up on the passwords and i cannot get right what I put in. I guess the only way to fix all of this is to remove everything and start again.
