Default wyse60 - 08-07-2006 , 10:40 PM

Can anyone recommend the simplest way to run a wyse60 over an ethernet
network?
Is there a device that does what a print server would do for a printer but
for a terminal.
The term "terminal server" seems to have many meanings and I'm not sure it's
what I'm looking for.
Thanks.

Oh, and just to be sure no one responds about using a terminal emulator I
should clarify.
This client has users who want to run a real wyse60 and not a pc.
Strange I know but you know how people can be.

1. Beat the IT manager to death with a WY-60.
2. Explain to the new IT manager that he needs to buy PCs and emulators.

Try a device like
http://www.equinox.com/products/netw...mi-serial-hub/

Unless you can install the driver software on your operating system you
will need two (2) devices (ie one at each end of the network) working
in tandem.

You need a "terminal Server"

Something like a Digi Server -
http://www.digi.com/products/externa...erverts816.jsp

They are basically network attached devices with rows of serial ports on.

They work with pretty much any O/S and with all MV databases (afaik!).

Bob,

If the Wyse 60 is in "close proximity" to a PC running Windows that is
already hooked up to the network, we have a product (SIP) that we
developed many years ago that allows you to run the terminal (or any
other serial device) using the serial port on the PC (? of course these
days, it is becoming increasingly common to run across machines that
don't even have a "normal" serial port, but that is a whole other
story.)

Apart from that you would need to find a port server of some kind --> I
believe Digi used to have such a device (which was too expensive in
retail sites, explaining why we wrote our own)

we used to use the chase iolan (apparently now owned by perle:
http://www.perle.com/products/Terminal-Server.shtml). We used pc's
running terminal emulators (it's insane to use a real dumb terminal--try
getting parts for them. incredibly cheap refurbed PC's are much more
reliable and maintainable) but we had a large number of proprietary data
collection devices that could only communicate over serial. The iolans
worked very well for that purpose.

I second Simon on the Digi; I used to have many flavors of the 16 port
devices installed at a lot of different sites, but as the Wyse's got
replaced with PCs I now have a lot of the 2/4 port versions installed
(for modems, talking to PBXs, etc). They work great and are pretty
bulletproof. (Just not very cheap: $180-360 per port. As they say
good, fast, cheap... pick 2 of the 3!). Try calling the Digi sales
support line; they are pretty helpful and and can decipher the product
differences for you. I now always buy the Digi RJ/DB converters as
well, it's easier than making cables and you use standard ethernet
patch cords.

Here is the link the to 1-4 port devices:

I'm no lover of terminals, I've been using Viaduct and Accuterm since
the DOS days.

BUT, I do have one client - it's a Mac shop. All their artists have
huge Macs on their desk, and they like the small footprint of a Wyse
terminal. I know, you're thinking "Mac to Pick", but they don't want
to share their screen space, and it's their choice.

So, in this case, bringing in a cheap PC running a terminal emulator is
simply not what they want. And it's their system. I am never going to
threaten to beat anyone.

Cheers

We use Systech Terminal Servers for those customers with 'dumb tubes'
out in the shop, they also do a nice job of making serial printers
available via lpr(tcp/ip) ports.
http://www.systech.com/rcs_3000.html - web browser or command line
setup - no need to install software.
