Default Where to go to find out - 09-25-2005 , 08:58 PM

Hi

I bet a lot of you have a whole lot of links to places like :
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/ that you use regularly
when you need to brush up your knowlegde on something. To save having
to google for "tutorial" and/or "online" and/or "free" - and some
keyword to limit the results to the subject you're interested in - and
then going through the links looking for a site that delivers what
you're really after, I thought it would be a good idea if there was a
thread where people could post links to the sites they've found most
valuable.

If you think it's a good idea and know some good sites, post away...

Cheers
Mike.

Agreed, or write an MV application that does something with the links
and post it to mvDevCentral. Putting generic links into a thread here
is transient and futile, sorry.

It would be nice if people would use PickSource to store that kind of
information. That's one the main reasons it's running, but one of the few
reasons to go there since no one contributes anything.

Here's in invaluable one that relates to another thread here:

It would be nice - I agree. Unfortunately it's not very busy though is
it?

There do seem to be a lot more people passing by here.

Leaving that aside for the moment - I am curious Glen: do you have
favourite sites you visit when you need to know how to do something new
to you?

Mike.

I tried to go to mvDevCentral just now and the site was down. To be
honest I had all but forgotten it existed. U2ug.org was also down the
other day, btw. There seem to be a lot of places for us pickies to go -
and a lot of them are very quiet - but at least here you're bound to
reach a lot of fellow pickies.

This (cdp) isn't transient - spend some time googling the archives and
you'll soon see that. As for whether it's futile or not - we can ensure
it will be or we could ensure it's not by posting a link or two.

You in particular Tony seem to be tapped in to a good source or two of
info on latest developments. Take Longhorn. I'd like to find out, for
instance, just what was planned for Longhorn before it was split into
Longhorn (server) and Vista (client) and, of the things originally
planned for Longhorn (server), which of those plans are still in place.
Also - why the name "Longhorn" - do you know? The name brings things to
my mind like "Where's the beef?", "What a load of bull!", "Selling the
sizzle (Vista) and not the steak", and various other things I prefer
not to think about too much. It's not so easy satisfying my curiosity
with searches - too many references to Longhorn and Vista to check them
all.

Cheers
Mike.

For various reasons I think it's better to have a website with links
of community interest rather than telling people to Google for a
thread of links. YMMV.

Books and magazines: MSDN, InformationWeek, CRN (Computer Reseller
News), Software Developer Magazine, some others. I also get a number
of e-newsletters from various business and technical sources. Most of
the time I just skim headings unless news pertains to some trend I'm
following or I recognize something new going on - reading time is
really sparse these days.

Lots of websites on the topic - you can Google for them.
Also a few books have been written on the topic, you can probably find
a major book store in NZ with some material. Amazes me that it's
accepted mainstream practice for people to write books on technology
that's still in alpha development - and in this market we have
products that have been out for years and no one wants a book on any
of it. Sigh.

Well, I guess you do understand why I don't like the idea of having a
thread of random links then.
