Default What do you use on UniVerse for editing code? - 11-07-2006 , 02:47 AM

I might be done some work on a UniVerse box.

When I use a pick box, I use update, and I can't really work will with the
old "line editor"

Even many moons ago, I would use JET on r83, and on Ultimate boxes, I would
execute a "term" command, and use the wp-in command.

On a UnvVerse box, what do you folks use (I *think* it is running on a sun
box, but I could be wrong).

Is there an editor for UniVerse?
I suppose I could download the eval versions of Universe from IBM's site....

I am curious what you folks use (or, better said, what kind of full screen
editor can I expect to find on this box?).

There are many full screen editors for UniVerse. Some are free, others
cost money. Each offers different features and you select the one that
works for you.

Many years ago, I attended a VMark user group meeting at which the
users were asking "where is the EDFS editor of Prime Information". The
then UK VP of Engineering responded that it was "too difficult". If
that isn't a challenge, what is?

A few weeks later, we launched our SED full screen editor which is very
similar to EDFS but with many extensions. We cheated slightly because
we already had it as part of our QM product and just ported it to
UniVerse.

This is still available and is widely used. Sadly, it is one of the
"costs money" offerings but our users tell us that the 100GBP (approx
180USD) for a permanent site wide licence is quickly regained in
increased productivity.

If you would like an evaluation version, please drop an email to

If the client is using AccuTerm, WED is a nice option :-)

You can use freeware PE GUI editor.

Hi, with the universe clients CD there is UNIDEBUGGER which is a full
development environment including editing, a session window and a gui
debugger. I recommend sticking with it as it may seem a bit fiddly at
first but is actually pretty good. It edits the code via uniobjects and
compiles/catalogs via a session.

Also is the trial version of wintegrate which has an excellent editor
(similar to the unidebugger one) - wintegrate is very cheap if you then
want to buy it.

If you are on *nix, then you can always learn vi (or vim), it is a very
powerfull text editor.

We have been using EditPlus at my current client, with great success. It
uses FTP to get in/out of universe files, has syntax highlighting, and you
can get a Universe .stx syntax file which works quite well. It's a small
footprint, and can handle very large files. I use it to both edit programs
and view csv files, which can get to be huge.

It has minimal nag after 30 days, costs $30.00 (we got a 5-user license
here), and when I emailed a support question, I got a response in 2 hours.

I really like the macro keystroke recorder, And it's got a bunch of other
features as well. Go to http://www.editplus.com/.

I usually edit programs as text files, so there are a lot of text
editors out there.

Personally, I use PSPad and ConTEXT.

I've been using ConTEXT for maybe a couple years now.
(http://www.context.cx) In some ways it's excellent but in other ways
it really sux. That said, I use it all the time as a replacement for
Notepad, for comparing items, and for many other benefits it includes.

Kev, do you have a PickBASIC highlighter for ConTEXT?

To answer the OP regarding MV code editing:
- AccuTerm wED is really great but not because it has a ton of
features but because the same tool works exactly the same for all
platforms.
- AccuTerm terminal emulation is also great because (for just one
reason) it's easy to map the keyboard and for different platforms, so
with a little time spent tweaking configurations you can use the
UPdate processor in D3, SED in QM, and vi in Linux, all from the same
tool.

Also, one of the best and most under-appreciated editing tools in our
industry is a product called mvToolbox from DMCons:
http:// removethisDMCONS.com/
It's a "Swiss Army Knife" (tm?) of tools for Pick developers and has
more features than even the author can remember - just ask him. This
software deserves some serious fanfare but I'm afraid the "getting to
know you" experience makes the product a little unapproachable. If
you can get beyond that, this software will bowl you over with the
wealth of Pick-specific features that are available. Contact Bro Cope
the author and get a demo.

It must be my infinite patients when waiting for product releases that
shall remain unnamed.

No. I never bothered looking for one or writing my own.
