I think the drivers are there as I just got an HP business class system
with dual-core AMD and it runs XP pro with no issues.

Yep, practically anything you do brings up a message (Do you want to
reply to the whole group, on ReplyGroup, for instance, to which my reply
might be No stupid, how about to some other group?) Most can be turned
off 1by1 "do not show again" checkbox, but it is a pain. Also does not
seem particularly faster (1.6Ghz) than my previous 1Ghz box.

Otoh, IE7 so far (2+ days) is 100% compatible on our extensively AJAXed
software, so that's one thing I don't have to worry about. As usual
more real-estate is taken up by the newfangled bars. One minor but
particularly annoying thing is that right-click on the Back button,
which used to bring up a list of 10 previous pages, does not. So for
those webpages which disable Back (may their designers be consigned to
Hell), it's much harder to go back to where you came from. This is
"progress."

Graphics are better, but that may be the HP box. There's a built-in
analog clock, and a whole new thing called "gadgets", shows where MS is
wasting its development $ (taskbar, gadgetbar, toolbar, where's the
singlemalt scotch bar?)

I actually have a Windows XP Pro disc, and should've thought of just
restoring the HP to XP. But then there's the nagging thought that XP may
not have the drivers for this latest model HP....oh, well.

You might be interested to know that the *!!@# *Vista Restore will not
restore the backup files from XP. If this is not the most brain-dead
decision ever made, I cannot think of one worse. Hanging may be too
good for
the programmers involved.

Turns out there is an NT program that can be downloaded from the web
that
"may" be able to restore XP .bkf files to Vista. After going the
rigmarole
of changing various settings to allow this beast to work, it barfed
with the
message "illegal processor type." I presume that's because my HP has
an AMD
processor (second mistake.)

Anyone know how to get data off the .bkf file? Other than restoring
it to a
working XP system?

I heart Microsoft.

Thanks for turning your pain into such an entertaining post.

My only experience to date with Vista is my son-in-law's machine. He
said that the first thing he had to figure out what how to turn off
the annoying messages that ask you at every turn whether to approve
something or other (it sounds like they were model dialogs). The next
thing he wanted to do was figure out how much of a risk it is to get
rid of such annoyances. Now any issues could be seen as his problem
since he turned it off. He claimed it was intolerable, but I have not
heard from others (except for the Apple ad) on that (nor have I looked
it up, this is the first Windows upgrade where I am in denial).

Best wishes with the recovery. If you had wanted a backup that
permitted a recovery, you should have taken it with the "with recovery
possible" parameter, perhaps?

I agree.

I've had to buy a couple of PCs and notebooks this last month. I've
found good deals on the Dell refurbished web page.

You have to act fast when you see what you want, but many of them do
have XP and the prices are great.

I'm sure we'll eventually get used to Vista, but I'm in no hurry. I
have so many other projects on my to do list... Like learning Cache,
and so many, many other new thing.s

Cheers
