Default Viewing pick files without booting - 05-31-2011 , 03:21 PM

Is there a utility that would allow viewing files on pick partition
without booting up in pick?

Do you mean an older version of Pick, such as AP/Pro, R83, etc. that
resides in its own partition of a hard drive? The other partition
usually being DOS?

I'm sure there is some disk utility that would let you look at any data
on the drive, but I highly doubt you're going to find something that
will let you view a specific Pick file's contents without Pick actually
running.

What exactly are you trying to do? Recover data from a failing drive?

Hi Kevin! Thanks for responding. I'm helping a restaurant with a down
POS. Its by a defunct company called IDS. I took the drive out and
found that it had 1 bad sector out of about 1000. The drive had 3
partitions... the one with data had an unknown partition type 62. I
tried linux, xp, and dos and none can mount any of the partitions. I
am able to see the data partition from linux, just can't mount it. I
used dd to back it up. My goal is to put a new hard drive in the POS
system and copy the data over. The customer has a hard drive from
years past, so I thought I could recover any corrupt files from that
one.

So I guess, to answer your question, I just need a mechanism to
transfer a file or two over from 1 pick partition to another.

Jeffrey,

You seem well-intentioned, but are obviously in uncharted waters
regarding Pick or D3. Unfortunately, to my knowledge there is no such
thing as a "mechanism to transfer a file or two over from 1 pick
partition to another" without having a running version of the
database. Additionally, If you change disks it is probable that D3
will require re-installation as well.

I strongly suggest you contact the developer of your restaurant
friend's POS system for support. If you can't do that, I suggest
paying for help from a local professional Pick expert, perhaps from
this list. What city are you in?

I am near Palm Springs Ca. I think the system is Pick and not D3. I do
have installer diskettes for pick.
Is it at possible to have a running Pick system and then copy data
from drive 2 (secondary)?

Paying is not a problem. The POS company is defunct for about 10 years
now.

We can pay a consultant. The restaurant company has been closed for
many years.

Since you haven't provided the info that Kevin requested, I'll guess
the system was running D3 Linux or D3 ProPlus. I'd suggest installing
a new Linux system and then mounting the old drive. "dd" the
partition from the old drive to the new one. Contact TigerLogic about
a license to use the partition on the new system. See if you can get
config data from /usr/lib/pick/pick0 in the old drive.

I think we can all assume that this site has never done a backup to
tape or to another system, or that all tape media is outdated or
corrupted. That's pretty typical when an end-user makes a panic call.
Please encourage the site to contract with someone who can help to
establish a backup plan so that this expensive situation does not
occur again.

Good luck to all involved.

If this was a linux system, wouldn't it see the partition instead of
calling it unknown 62?
The floppy install disks say Pick and not D3.
