Default Using Hyperstar to get data out of UV - 09-26-2006 , 02:19 PM

All,

We have an old UV database that I have been tasked with getting data
out of and into Microsoft SQL Server. Though I am solid in SQL Server,
I know almost nothing about the structure of this UV system.

I understand that there is a tool called Hyperstar (that may be a part
of UV?) that will allow me to connect via ODBC. I am told that
Hyperstar is already on our system.

My questions are these:
-- How do I verify that Hyperstar is installed and is available on our
system (HP/UX)?
-- What do I need to do to configure UV to allow Hyperstar connections?
-- Where can I find the Windows ODBC drivers to allow me to connect my
SQL Server database to Hyperstar?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks~

Hi
Get yourself a contractor with IBM U2 experience immediately.
Universe is a multidimensional database, converting to a two dimensional
database is not a trivial task. If you only want some reports then that is
OK. If you are considering writing the package anew you are headed for
disaster as U2 is a total development environment not just a database.

Hi

Typing "CONFIG" , sans quotes of course, at the UniVerse command prompt
will tell you whether or not the ODBC package has been installed and
licensed. In earlier releases it was installed seperately... Prior to
9.6 I think.

Also ".L RELLEVEL" will give the release... Which would be useful for
us all.

If you mail me I can forward you an IBM troubleshooting guide that'll
help with further technicalities. Another thing you may want to
consider is one of the many third party apps out their that can be used
as middleware to flatten the data out... mvQuery is one that springs
to mind thats extremely easy to implement and use.

The suggestion to get some help is a good one. If you are skilled
with .NET you may also be interested in mv.NET which is a suite of
libraries which can be used to extract Universe data into an ADO.NET
dataset, or the Universe schema can be mapped to Insert queries for
SQL Server. We can work with you to export data according to your
schema or in whatever format you want (XML, Web Service so you can
query Universe from SQL Server, etc) so that you don't need to learn a
new API, or if this is a longer term project or there will be more
like it, then we can provide assistance for working with Universe and
the mv.NET libraries as you go. Lots of ways to approach this, it
doesn't have to be difficult.
See this link and email for more info:

Good luck in any case.
