We use the slightly old version 4.5.1 of Help&Manual to build the QM
documentation. One of the features that is really nice is that the
same file can produce pdf, Windows help, HTML help, e-books and a host
of other formats with the option to select what goes into each output
format if there are to be differences.

We tried the new version 5 but did not find any reason to justify the
upgrade at this time. Perhaps later.

I will add that when we have encountered any problems, the support has
been excellent.

Thank you Martin... I'll check it out since I'm familiar with the QM
help screens.

I'll toss out a related question: Has anyone found an e-book format
that is both convenient for the consumer as well as secure for the
author in terms of ensuring payment for the product? PDF and other
doc media discussed here are fine for free material. But an ebook
which is sold as an alternative to hardcopy must be locked to a given
device and/or user. This falls under the category of Digital Rights
Management (DRM), and dove-tails with Will Johnson's recent note about
selling documentation on a website. The only way I can think of at
the moment to ensure payment for material I write is to have it
printed in hardcopy at lulu.com or similar. That adds to the cost of
business, as does an expensive DRM-compliant ebook publishing system.

Thanks,
T

The effort to curb piracy will likely not be worth it. Just publish
your PDF as a paid download. DRM sucks for legitimate users by locking
the media to a single device. If someone wants to break your copy
protection, they will. If you're just trying to keep honest people
honest, well, give them the chance to be honest.

I'm not trying to keep honest people honest, I'm trying to make it
more difficult for dishonest people to be dishonest. On our homes
we have locks on solid doors but we have glass windows which are
easily broken. We can't completely protect anything but we all put up
barriers in different places to discourage some degree of malice. In
this case I'm just drawing my lines of trust and tolerance at
different levels from you.

Help&Manual can create e-books that are tied to a specific CD or USB
memory stick. I don't know how hard it would be to crack but it is an
effective security system for most users.
