Default US address database - 09-24-2010 , 10:10 AM

Hi all,

I am working on a project in which I need a database of US postal
addresses. Does anyone know how I can get my hands on this database.
It does not have to be in a pick file and actually I would prefer it
not to be. A cvs delimited file or fixed field length is fine.

Thanks for your help,

Rick

I'm the wrong side of the pond to provide a definitive answer, but according
to the information here:
http://www.usps.com/ncsc/addressinfo...ssinfomenu.htm, it is possible to
purchase exactly what you want from the USPS National Customer Support
Centre. They can be contacted on 1-800-238-3150.

You can download a quite detailed Technical / User Guide on all AIS products
from here
http://ribbs.usps.gov/addressing/doc...s/pubs/AIS.PDF which
provides details of the products available, file layout, etc.

If I've misunderstood your request, I apologise.

Mike,

I called them yesterday. USPS does not supply address due to privacy
rights. They only supply zip code validation.

Could you define this better?

You want every possible address on every street in the country?

I'm sure it won't be in Pick format.

Yes, every street address. I found a site that will provide a 590 meg
csv file of this data. I then have to import to MV (no problem). It
costs $299.

Ridiculous and wrong for so many reasons.

Rick, we live in a world where the internet makes live,
context-appropriate data instantly available. There's no need to
download massive databases into a silo that will be invalid by the
time the download finishes. Consider making use of the modern
paradigm: SOA / SaaS / Web Services / The Cloud

An application that requires the presence of such a database is not
well thought out.

590MB is about enough to provide 2 million records, not "every street
in the country". Perhaps you mean 590GB?

A zip database for USA and Canada can be had from
zipcodedownload.com. There are several levels of data available. We
maintain and update a full internal database of zips for USA and
Canada with various data fields. As far as importing and storing
addresses, good luck with that. You will need to get CASS certified in
order to obtain the the semi-annual release of addresses on disc. Even
then, they're outdated as soon as you get them! Unless you plan on
making tons of profit from the solution, don't bother looking at
storing and maintaining a full set of address data. It is really
costly and time consuming. Only mailing houses get enough benefit from
the level of cost and maintenance. I've been there already. Review my
article from way back when (Jan/Feb 08 I think) in Spectrum magazine
for free and for-fee methods to get US-only or US/Canada address
validation over the web. You can also validate parcel delivery
addresses using the XML-based UPS address validation service, if you
have a UPS account. Post office boxes and some other destinations
won't be included, since they aren't parcel delivery locations.
MelissaData (referenced in my article) also has other products for
bulk address cleaning and simple or complex city/state/zip/info
lookups.

I'm ticked at MelissaData for harvesting my email address, continuing
to provide it to new customers, and continuing to send me direct spam
on behalf of their customes - despite numerous email and phone
requests to stop. I'm considering legal remedies as they're clearly
in violation of state and federal laws.

For the record, this project is not to going to be used for sending
mail of any kind or sold to anyone. It is simply an indexing and
verification project for in house use only.
