Default Upgrading a PC that's running Mentor Pro - 07-10-2006 , 08:31 AM

Hi

I have a Mentor Pro system running on a Pentium machine that was put in
during 1999. I want to replace the hardware and wonder if anyone has
experience with the current Intel machines running Mentor Pro, from a
compatibility point of view.

I think the version is 4.1, but I'm only speaking from memory. I can't get
access to the machine without driving to it.

From past experience Mentor Pro was always great at supporting new hardware,
without updating it. I may consider replacing the O/S and running Windows
but my first preference is to replace the processor.

Thanks

Not sure if MP would support new hardware or not!

The best bet would be to upgrade to mvBASE (on Windows 2003 server) - which
will have almost 100% compatibility with MP or to migrate to another MV
product - D3/jBASE/OpenQM for example.

Migrations to all of these should be reasonably simple - depending of course
on the nature of your code!

Regards
Simon

Hmmm. Will mvBASE even be around for that much longer? I'd be a little
concerned about that choice. The others are all fine choices, but mvBASE?

Well to be honest, I hope I made clear that mvBASE wouldn't be my first
choice, but seeing as the OP is still using Mentor Pro (which must have
been end of line even it was originally installed by the OP) then being
100% current doesn't seem to be an issue.

mvBASE is a superb product for those that simply want to migrate MP to
newer hardware - so shuold buy 5 years of life I would think.

Personally, I would consider migrating to jBASE - porting from MP
shouldn't be too painful, and it is probably a safe choice.

If their are no user exits then the code should just cross compile with
very minimum effort and the data should come straight across. The
product should be fully up and running in less than a day - by a
professional consultant.

Just my 2 euro's!

Just a thought and I don't know if it will work but have you considered
VMware?

I've run mentor pro under vmware and it runs fine (and ohhh so very
fast). However, vmware doesn't virtualize the serial adapters and tape
drives that a legacy system is likely to have. Might work if they use
only standard scsi tape, and use picklan for all the terminal sessions
though.
The other problem with mentor pro under vmware is that mentor
agressively sucks all the cpu cycles that it can get, so it doesn't play
well with other virtual machines or host programs running at the same
time unless you choke down its priority.

You might want to get rid of those pesky multivalue thingies.
