Default SMS from D3 NT - 01-05-2006 , 03:19 PM

We are investigating methods of sending a text message from withing a D3
(Windows) program. Has anyone gone down this road and have a simple
solution?
Thanks very much,
Jeff

I don't know where in the world you are, but we do it using a email -> sms
forwarding service. You can use a prduct such as "blat" to actually send
the email...

The service I use in the uk (www.fastsms.co.uk) takes a simple text email
and converts the body into an sms. It even works two-way - ie converts an
incoming text message to an email.

You should be able to find an equivalent service whereever you are in the
world.

Same gateway (email), but there is an "interesting" add on to the
MDAEMON mail server that allows you to actually hook up a "real mobile"
(or banks of them) to send the SMS messages ... if you have a plan with
free (or very cheap) text messaging, this can save you heaps (NOTE: I
haven't used the product, but it looks interesting)

Like Simon, we have users that use an Email>SMS gateway service, though
of course we use Visage.Emailer or MailLynx rather than blat. I also
note from the sideba ads in google that companies like
http://smsdelivery.net/ offer web based capabilities

All sorts of "nice" things then become possible. One of our clients
supplies locksmiths Australia wide. When a imported shipment is held up
they simply change the status & delivery date for their PO/Shipment and
the system automatically sends 100's of SMS messages to the impacted
Locksmiths (who always carry a mobile on the hip) that wee waiting for
stock from that order --> this used to be a full time, manual job

Jeff, check out this CDP thread on the topic:
http://tinyurl.com/8qzb4

With your NebulaMail software you and your clients can already send
mail to phones as SMS messages, but as discussed in that thread, not
all cellphone devices and services are the same.

As always, let me know if you'd like me to whip something up.

My best,
Tony

The comments that followed this threat bring up something that would be
helpful.
Why not post the company that you are associated with, an applicable
URL and your location with each post.

This is interesting.
We are a medical services company and I hesitate to use a 3rd party to send
messages due mainly to reliability and to ensure that we are not leaving
these messages on someone else's server. Obviously, this is not a secure
situation and medical results will not be contained in these messages but
having an "in-house" solution would be most desireable.

That means setting up our own SMS server where we directly transmit messages
to cell phones. I don't know what equipment is necessary but I imagine
there is software that translates the text to SMS message format and then to
a phone (Ross' "real mobile" suggestion) which actually sends the message.

Thanks to everyone for their insights and experience,
Jeff

Jeff:

I'd think you could set up Windows Text message service that would
automatically use the standard Windows SMTP service. Then, from D3, you
could set up a 'Q' pointer to the "C:\Intepub\mailroot\Pickup" directory and
"WRITE" whatever email message you want to this 'Q' pointer file.

Or, better yet, get a product where you can write an email directly to it.

Jeff,

Have you tried the free & unsupported Microsoft product SMSsender.
This can be found at http://tinyurl.com/mk22

SMSsender works as both a windows program and from the command line.

I have played with this program using a NOKIA phone connected via the
serial connector and it works quiet well.

Good Luck
Mario.
