Default Serial printer requires stop/start (offline/online) to print - 01-19-2007 , 11:50 AM

I have a serial printer that intermittently requires a stop/start
(offline/online) on the panel to get it to print a job. When a user
sends a job to it, it won't print, the queue in LISTPEQS shows it as
being printed, go to the printer and press the stop (offline) button
and then the start (online) button and away it goes. Sometimes
requires multiple tries, but usually once is enough.

One thing I found is that if I hold the print queue, then queue up all
my jobs, then release the queue, it will print every job without a
problem. Once that run is down however, it will require the stop/start
to get it going again. It's almost as if after waiting more than a few
seconds it assumes an XOFF state and never gets the XON to go again.

It sounds like a noisy serial line. Do all your printers behave that
way? Do you have another line you can connect the printer to?

I never had thought about the physical cabling until now. Thanks. I
checked the cable and the end at the wall was nearly crushed. Made a
new cable and now only time will tell.'

In the midst of replying I got Marshall's latest post...sorry about my
empty prior post! Since I was your predecessor, Marshall, I think
you've found the problem! Good luck! If it wasn't the crushed cable
near the connector, the cable itself might be strung near an
electromagnetic field. That will be much more difficult to diagnose
since the cable runs through PVC under the floor and within walls. I
hope your fix takes care of the problem and gets Mark G. off your
back!!!

*grin*

(Additional...Google was real slow in posting my "empty" reply...I
wonder what the lag on this one will be!?!?!?)
