Default SB+ Screen Layout - 09-13-2006 , 02:35 PM

All-

We've a client who sent us some SB+ screens for cnversion to
OpenInsight. We're having trouble figuring out the layout- in the
dictionary of the file in question we have what we believe is a screen
definition- it looks like this:

SCREEN
A
1
N?Y?....
0
0,0,79,17

and so on. Having gone through tons of SB docs, we can't find the
format of this structure. Can someone provide any assistance? It is
greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

I don't think that you will be able to parse thru the screen data.

There may be a conversion program that will convert SB+ to OPENINSIGHT.

WILL be a product along the lines you suggest - right Mike?

You may want to contact CA Software (www.casoftware.co.uk) - I think
the person you may want to speak to is Neil Charrington (I hope he
doesn't mind me referencing him). CA have a product called mv4gl
which is a gui 4gl, which converts sb+ to mv4gl. Whilst mv4gl
probably won't work on OpenInsight, CA must know the internals of SB+
so may be able to assist in a technical consultancy capacity.

Mike;

There are a number of other companies that do this:
www.u2logic.com
www.binarystar.com/sb_migration.html
http://www.mv4gl.com/Prod_mvSBC.shtml
http://www.sc-sys.com/sbconverter.html (may be the same as the previous
entry)
www.designbais.com

There may be more. You can try the SB Solutions list at u2ug.org - someone
there may have something.

Of course, all of them probably just convert the SB+ definition to their own
format - not sure if you'll have any more luck there. I'm also not sure if
any of them convert the GUI screens or just the character screens (you have
a character screen definition here).

Me, I've "hacked" them a little and most things aren't too hard to figure
out.

I have the SB+ internals document the OP requested. It was on the
resource kit that IBM published ... about a year ago as I recall.

Kevin-

Can I get a copy? Or can you direct me to where you found it?

Thanks!

I doubt it'll be a product- we just need to convert some screens to
help out a client whose a bit stuck right now. Once we get it mostly
moved over we can touch it up by hand.

Thanks

If you do find the answer, please feel free to share ... the people we
have moved from SB+ originally were all going to help us with a
migration tool, and ended up deciding it was easier to "do it right"
.... still, as useful capability.

I would suggest that even if you DON'T end up with a "real
tool"/product, the fact that you have even a token capability may help
you move some people

(TOTAL ASIDE: Got a flier from IBM today on DB2 9 and there is a line
in there I thought was just GREAT for your marketing department ...
"DB2 9 is a revelation" ! Do you think you should sue, or just take
royalties :-)

Like I mentioned before, it was on the U2 resource kit CD from IBM.
I'm sure if you drop a note to the U2 users group someone at IBM should
be able to help you get this disk - which contains a wealth of very
useful stuff. Obviously I can't post their document but if you go to
my website (precisonline.com) and drop me an email I don't think it
would be violating any rules or laws to share the copy I have.
