It is much more difficult to hack than a public SSH port.
Wouldnt the VPN server port be just as 'hackable'?

With a VPN, you have to manually configure the client with a key
that will work with the server key. If either changes, there's no
connection. You don't have to do that with SSH, so the connection is
more vunerable. The only thing you are required to do for SSH is
configure your own unique user certificate and key for all SSH based
connections.

I'd like to thank everyone who offered me help/advice following my
recent post troubleshooting an SSH connection over broadband. However -
it looks as though Glen has found me a good solution here...

I've been putting off trying out VPNs, mainly because I didn't want to
commit myself to spending too much on a hardware router without fully
understanding all of the features.

I just installed an OpenVPN server & two clients in the last few days,
and it works very well indeed. This was the site where I had been having
difficulty with OpenSSH.

It was easy to install and configure, and seems to work very reliably. I
think I'll be setting-up OpenVPN on a few of our sites over the next few
weeks...

Thanks for the advice!
