Default R83 to D3/NT - 06-03-2005 , 04:04 PM

An R83 user called me. Here is his problem.
--He needs to get two(2) accounts off his R83 system to load to D3/NT.
--On R83, he has a 360 floppy and an old 4-track QIC drive.
--On R83, he reloaded ABS and lost the tape drive software. He cannot
reload it again (has loaded it the maximum number of times).
-- The tape software is QIC/GTI Generic Tape Interface QIC36/02 June
1993 by Mainstream Technologies on 5.25" Low Density diskette. Anyone
out there have a spare one of these?

-- The real question is: Is there any way possible to transfer the
accounts from R83 to D3/NT -- other than using dozens of floppy
diskettes? Even floppy is a problem (5.25" to 3.5").

I know this guy should have upgraded long ago. But, are there any solid
ideas from any of you on how to pull off a data conversion?

The customer is based in Southern California and is ready and willing
to pay for any help he can get.

He might be able to use the file transfer functions of Accuterm or some
other term program. It would be a pain if there are lots of files, but
it may work as a last resort.

Dave I have a process that grabs files and dicts from a D3 account using
Accuterm. I also have a process that reloads it into another account.
Unfortunately the Load process is for QM. I abandoned the project the QM
tape processing became a project for them. The dumps does work with D3
and most likely r83. If you want it let me know.

Patrick,

I am a true-blue AccuTerm user. I use AccuTerm all the time for
transporting items and/or files to/from client sites (using my ATSYNC
utility). Sooooo, I have given some thought to using AccuTerm to do the
transfers. It may be the only or best way to accomplish the transfers.

First, we have to find out if the customer has serial access to the R83
system so we can hook an AccuTerm Workstation (PC) to R83. The customer
was going to work on this using one of the COM ports if possible since
the old serial board seems to have died.

Your utility to use AccuTerm to transfer all the files and dicts in an
account sounds very inviting. I could pretty easily do the other end
(that you abandoned).

Let's see what else comes up in this thread. I may be contacting you to
discuss your utility further. At the least, thanks for the offer.

Best Regards,

Dave contact Zumasys support who has the SCSI Connection for R83. They
can provide Pro Services or sell hardware to solve your customer's
problem

Tom -- Now, THAT'S the Zumasys I know and love! When I first talked
with this customer by phone, I suggested he call Zumasys. He said he
had already done that and the person he spoke to said it would be too
cost prohibitive (whatever the hell that means) and they (Zumasys)
could not help him!

I will phone the customer and point him in your direction, Tom. BTW,
the customer is "near" you! Hopefully, you can help this company save
their old records!
