Default Quick question about multivalue history - 07-20-2005 , 03:57 PM

Who was it that put PICK on the IBM Series One? What was the company name? And whatever happened to him?

You may be thinking of the late Jim Whelan of Seattle Lab.

I'm pretty sure that's not who i'm thinking of. This particular person I think was based somewhere in the Midwest, possibly chicago. Memory is hazy after two decades, but I seem to remember he got into some kind of difficuly with Pick regarding copyright or patent infingement.

Not as fuzzy as mine. Bingo, kudos - who was the CEO?

In retrospect, I'm not sure SMI did the S1, but that was the company I think i was looking for.

Does anyone know who founded it?

George Ridgway was already mentioned.

Seattle OS, later renamed Pick Blue IIRC.

IIRC, SMI did a pick implementation on some heavy metal from IBM, but it
wasn't S1.

CDI which became Seattle Lab did the Series/1 in 1983. Gordan Ayres, Kip
McAfee, George Coleman, Mark Brown, Denis Kreuger and a great guy I can't
for the life of me remember his name--we went back to General Dynamics
together in '84--(sorry; and sorry if I misspelled anyone's name)

FWIW, Ultimate also did a port to the big IBM iron. 4300 and 3090
architecture, IIRC.

Weren't they also known as "Seattle OS" and, later, Pick Blue (using the
IBM-style horizontal blue lines for their logo)?
