Default question about updating green screens to windows - 07-13-2005 , 09:12 PM

I've been running GA-Pick, AP/SCO and now D3/Linux for about 15 years
now. We've still using some of the same Link terminals we bought back
in '89 or '90, and now I think its time to give some of my inside
sales & office staff an upgrade. I'll be buying half a dozen HP PC's
with XP Pro (Although I've considered Fedora) and adding VSI-FAX.

My question is the terminal emulator. I'm probably the only user who
will ever import/export data to Excel (well, OpenOffice). Everybody
else really just needs to add productivity software, faxing, and
internet access to their old green screens. I'm planning on trying out
Accuterm & Wintegrate. Is there anything else I should be considering?

Should I seriously look at anything other than VSI-FAX for faxing?
Where can I find information on integrating VSI-FAX with my D3 application?

Herb, if you see this, I'm also configuring one of the PC's as a RAID
server and will finally be buying that virtual tape backup from you.

I can recomend Wintegrate, you can do alsorts with it, and it runs very
neatly.

G'day Bruce,

I'm biased (spoilt?) in terms of Fax solutions, and we use
Visage.Faxer. You can deliver faxes via email if you like, and/or just
print them, and whilst primarily designed to operate with other members
of the Visage Application Development Framework for outgoing faxes
(Reporter & WordLynx), it will happily fax "anything" (eg: a text
file, html formatted file etc) that you generate from D3.

Just keep this in the back of your mind if VSI*Fax is more than $249.

In terms of terminal emulators, I've been a happy AccuTerm user for
many years, and IIRC there are also some examples of how you can use
AccuTerm with WinFax - not necessarily a 'gateway' product, but
this may meet your needs

Accuterm. TCP/IP instead of serial.

otoh. While faxing is still necessary. Have you looked at
the volume of faxing? And looked into the cheaper option,
switching the bulk of it over to email? If facsimile
delivery is necessary, sending the 'fax' as an attached
email instead of through dial up?

Bruce,

We have successfully integrated Hylafax (comes with most Linux
distro's) with our D3/Linux system, & it is working great!!!!

Let me know if you want details.

Kudos for not trying to skimp on the terminal emulator -- I really hate
using
the telnet that comes with windows -- free 3rd party "Putty" has a better
screen than win telnet!

We use Accuterm {97 and 2004 -- 2004 adds encryption}; we like their
upload/download pickbasic utilities -- copies items between two pick
servers you've logged in to in seperate session windows. Tried and
true, even over quite awful dialup or vpn connections.

Not sure if Accuterm or Vsifax is cheaper, but when you compare be sure to
look at the site license product, not just single user pricing.

Erm, I meant to write Wintegrate, not Vsifax.

Indeed. We eliminated fax capability completely from our software once we'd
built in Email. Only two customers admitted to faxing anything regularly
anyway. We now tell our customers that on those rare occasions they need to
fax something, do it the old-fashioned way --- print it out and then stick it
in the fax machine....

And you don't have to care what emulator program you use; you can use anything
you want.
