Default Pick/Unidata/U2/D3 Programmer/Analyst available - Australia - 06-24-2005 , 01:45 AM

Hi

Many of you will know me, either from having worked with me, from
meeting me at Pick conferences and seminars, or from my posts to this
and other newsgroups. I am now finding it very difficult to find a Pick
programming job in Australia since becoming unemployed suddenly in
February and have been working as a casual labourer for the past
several weeks.

I'm a lot fitter and stronger now - but it's not really the career
progression I had in mind.

I know I have good skills and want to put them to good use. If you have
an opening (short- or long- term) and would like me to send my CV
please email me off-list. Location is not really important.

Alternatively, if you have any constructive suggestions about what it
is I've been doing wrong to wind up in this sorry state I'd be
interested to know. From where I sit it just seems I've had some bad
luck.

It seems Chicken Little has been quite active down under - convincing
many people that Pick's world is caving in and that we should all get
out and convert to Microsoft-based systems and/or SQL databases. Hell -
even the Australian government has apparently stipulated that
Pick-based systems are inelligible for their requirements (I'd like to
know more about this btw - it's just something I heard from a reputable
source).

I'm really not keen to work on any migrations away from Pick - that
would be lower than I'd be prepared to go. On the other hand, I'd much
prefer to find an end-user that is maybe not so happy with their
Pick-based system but would be prepared to give it and me a chance to
shine. Anything in between would certainly be of interest. Hey - I'm
really not very fussy. I haven't taken to begging yet but, just like a
beggar, I can't afford to be much of a chooser at the moment.

Mike.

Did you not reply to the ad placed here by Ross F., from Stamina

Mike, don't get down on yourself. I know some of the work you've done
and I think it's a shame that you keep getting zapped by lightning.
Next time we find ourselves in a pub though, I hope you don't mind if
I sit on the opposite side of the room? LOL At one point in the late
80's, a prospective employer discovered that every other employer that
I had worked full time for either went out of business or they were
bought out. He decided that it would be OK to hire me since it
wouldn't be his turn to go out of business. (Oh my God, Pick Systems
was one of the odd numbered ones...)

Anyway, I'll e-mail you off-list about some possible options. You'll
be fine.

My best,
T

Tony,

There is no Pick Systems anymore.

Does a name change or a buy out count as going out of business?

LOL - well, none of my clients have gone out of business yet but one
was bought out. (Lesson to everyone here, if you're going to get
references from your clients, be sure to do it while they're still in
business...) And remember, this is every Other full-time employer, so
the Next one should be safe from "the curse" - if there is a next one.
