Default PICK Ports - 09-17-2010 , 09:56 PM

Here are the ports I listed on the Family Tree poster, in order.
Because I was most interested in the evolution and implementations of
MV BASIC and MV Query languages, my info related to hardware was only
as a by product of interviews and research on other fronts. I have
just seen information from Henry and Eugene about two other possible
ports. Does anyone know what, if anything, should be changed in this
list? For example, should these new suggestions show up in this list?
I am sure it has inaccuracies and likely some things are not written
the way they ought to be, even given this abbreviated format. Any and
all suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance. If I ever upgrade this
poster, it would be good to have the information on ports as accurate
as possible. Maybe I should include the larger ports in this list too
(others are shown in the arrowed diagram because they are more
relevant to the evolution of the two languages I was tracking. I'll
add the link here in case it is helpful http://tincat-group.com/mv/MVFamilyTreeColor.pdf)

Also, for most of these I have very few stories and confirmations. I
tried to have at least one primary source in addition to any secondary
ones, but I know I did not have that for all of these, so even if you
have a story about any of these ports, I'm all ears.
Thanks. --dawn

Also, about Altos, just yesterday I listed an Acer 710 under Vintage
Computing on eBay. When I visited Altos, right after the Acer
takeover, they had both an Intel and a Motorola Pick license.

The 710 appears to have been targeted as a cheap Pick development
machine. Did anyone ever see the same machine with an Altos label on
it?

No, they are in the larger body of the family tree, rather than in the
small print of the ports at the top (see http://tincat-group.com/mv/MVFamilyTreeColor.pdf).
The list of ports are those which did nothing to advance the two
languages I was tracking. They were just ports of PICK onto new
hardware. I'm not a hardware guy, but I had collected and found quite
a bit of information about various ports that were otherwise
irrelevant to my work, so I simply listed these at the top. The three
you mention here were "bigger ports" in that people actually used them
and/or they helped to advance the languages. I'm definitely happy to
hear stories about any of the biggies -- the ones in the body of the
poster. Thanks. --dawn

Yes, definitely. I did have some folks mention this, but I forget why
it didn't make my list, perhaps bz I didn't understand where it would
fit. Where does that fit on the timeline? Who did the port? Did anyone
ever run it live? these questions and more. Any stories are welcome.
Thanks. --dawn

Hi Dawn,

There was another port done by Microdata in the early eighties.

It was called pcMicroReality and it ran on a Convergent
Technologies M1000 (the M1000 was the branding of the CT box by
Microdata).
I even remember the code name of the project ('Rudolph') before
the official launch of the product. I spent some time in Hemel
Hempstead working on the project before it's release and ended up
supporting it afterwards.

Unfortunately it was very short lived as, soon thereafter, the
first MsDos PCs arrived and the rest as they say is history.

I tried to Google Convergent Technology to no avail but I do
remember that the M1000 had very nice 'clip-on' blocks which could add
disk to the main unit and you could run serial cables to set up
'satellite' units which could have their own local disks/printers or
they could share the 'main' units peripherals. A mini network if you
will ....

It also had very nice spreadsheet and word processor software
native to the CT operating system.

Regards,

Niall Heelan

Hi Dawn,

As we discussed at the Spectrum Conference, it would be nice to move
QM out of the obscurity of the "See also" box. We are a serious player
in the multivalue market. At Spectrum, we were displaying a sign
saying "Over 100 installations in the last 100 days". This trend has
continued and now at day 264 of the year we can claim 281 commercially
licensed installations this year.

Pretty sure that UpBoard was an OA implementation.

that's probably wrong.

They both came out of Seattle WA??

Well, I guess that I should jump in here since I was the Product
Manager at Sanyo/ICON (proper spelling of the company name) at the
time we released the UpBoard product (not sure that I remember the
exact product spelling).

I am in the process of going through all my Pick stuff. I know I have
several UpBoard boards and will look for ID's on them.

This was a Motorola 68000 coprocessor board that plugged into a PC and
ran a version of R83.

Again, pretty sure it was OA and not R83 but I will confirm when I get
to that section of the pallet racks.

The port was done by Seattle Lab if I remember correctly (pretty darn
sure that is correct)

Hence the lawsuit between Pick System and Jim ?? ?

but the product was only offered by Sanyo/ICON in conjunction with
their other system that ran Unix and R83 simultaneously.

Again, pretty sure that at least one of the boards was not purchased
from Sanyo/Icon.
