This must have been when when you were trying to sign up then, as I
note that you were not on the (prospective) contestants list? I wonder
how many other last minute entrants there might have been?

Gus/Spectrum/The Judges are currently tossing around the idea of
publishing "the challenge that never was", just for reference. May be
interesting just from the point of view that it may inspire more people
to takeup the challenge next time around (or not) - might even dispel
some of the doubts (or confirm suspicions :-) of people like Bruce
Mate, I'm tempted, bloody tempted..... You know about what.....

No decision made yet. Note that if it is released, the spec is as yet
"untested". That is, the event was cancelled just before we did a dry
run in order to ensure that it's an understandable challenge,
realistic expectations, logical judging criteria etc.. I'm concerned
someone will see it as-is and flog it for some flaw that we would have
worked out had this actually come to pass. That wouldn't be fair for
next year.

I understand the concern, but I would hope that the people who would
read it have seen enough "real specs" from users to realize there are
holes you could drive a semi-trailer through. In the "real world" this
is when you would talk to the client - in the comp these may become
part of the judging criteria (second sight helps :-)

However, there is a big chance it simply becomes "filler" - if people
weren't going to spend time to find out in the comp, are they likely to
bother to read in the mag or on the website (OK, I can guarantee an
audience of 4 or 5) ? Of course, it could be that they do, and interest
will be spawned again for next year - luckily not my call.

Did a liveaboard there a few years back. Had a Jly 4th F-16 fly past....
"Any boats in the bay fancy a fly past?" Captn transmitted coords and next
minute 3 F-16s barrel rolled overhead. Your tax dollars at work - thanks
peeps!

Normally never dive anywhere that needs anything other than a skin or a
shorty - well I qualify in the UK for "worst case" reasons. So rescue diver
in 50oF water etc. But Catalina had some lovely kelp beds.

Reconsidering diving in favour of Universal as will be diving at the end of
March in Caribbean.

Last time I swam a roughwater race over there i forgot what i was there
for, the bottom so clear, the life below so inviting. Hadda kick up and
backstroke to refocus on racing. Beautiful! The event was called the
'clearwater classic', and clear it was.

Anyone thinking of heading over to Catalina on the Monday for a dive
or two before the show?

We dove Catalina a year or two ago. I'm not coming to Spectrum, but even
if
I were I would skip Catalina. Too expensive for a 7mil dive in 10 foot
vis.
Call me a wimp, but I'd rather save my dive dollars for somewhere warm
and
clear.

Now you are talking! Just love those theme parks (but have just spent a
week on our Gold Coast with the kids, so I'm kinda coasted out at the
moment)
